GREAT BRITAIN. Christ's Hospital (The Bluecoat School) Marker's Prize Silver Medal, 1858. PCGS SPECIMEN-63.
Eimer-66A; MI-61/16. Diameter: 35mm. By L. Pingo. Obverse: Bust of Edward VI right wearing unusual crown, legend around; Reverse: Bible opened to Exodus, HEAR READ MARK LEARN around, CHRIST's HOSPITAL INST MDLIII in exergue; Edge: engraved COLIN WILLIAM GITTINGS 1858. A somewhat unusual educational medal that was struck circa 1790 and awarded through the end of the 19th century, with the present example falling right in the middle of that range. This piece displays satisfying dove and magenta gray hues along with a brilliant flash to the surfaces. The strike is sharp in the centers but does show a hint of weakness in the obverse legend. An intriguing and very historical medal British collectors can appreciate.
