VENEZUELA. Venezolano, 1876-A. Paris Mint. PCGS SPECIMEN-62.
KM-Y-16; Stohr-36. A simply marvelous and awe-inspiring specimen issue from the Paris Mint, this phenomenal offering delivers an eye appeal that is hard to explain with words. Rich and shimming luster sets the surfaces apart from a normal business strike, as the finish is highly reflective and argent. Many die lines streak across the surfaces, and the fields are largely clean of marking or handling. A most impressive piece that would serve any collector of Venezuelan coinage well as a capstone piece. EXTREMELY RARE in this presentation quality, it is generally thought that Specimen strikings that emanated from the Paris Mint during this period had mintages around 10 pieces. After consultation with a specialist in the field, it appears that only 6-7 examples of this issue are presently known. Of those, there are five examples that appear in the combined PCGS and NGC census. One instance in known to be a duplicate of the same coin, while others may have been submitted multiple times as well, leaving four or less certified examples extant. Combined with the fact that this is the only date for the Venezolano denomination, and it is also the immediate predecessor to Bolivar coinage, it truly stands as a coin with few equals in the Venezuelan series.
