GREAT BRITAIN. Pound, ND (1594-96). London Mint; mm: Woolpack. Elizabeth I. PCGS MS-61.
S-2534; Fr-214; N-2008. Sixth issue. Obverse: Crowned and mantled bust right, wearing ruffled collar; Reverse: Crowned and garnished coat-of-arms; E-R across field. An enchanting and impressively resounding specimen, this larger format gold striking presents a detailed and highly intricate bust of the reigning queen in exceptional splendor. From her bejeweled bodice to her gem-studded crown, from her flowing hair to her ruffled collar, the engraver captured this moment in time rather expertly. Meanwhile, the flan has survived the ensuing five centuries quite remarkably well, with no issues of which to note and no real evidence of time spent in commerce. As such, this lustrous and alluring example stands as one of the finest known of the type, with this particular piece being the finest certified by PCGS with the woolpack mintmark. Undoubtedly an English RARITY that should generate exceptional enthusiasm from the most advanced connoisseurs of the series.
