Description

CC-87. Continental Currency. January 14, 1779. $1. PMG Gem Uncirculated 65 EPQ.
No. 69596. Signed by D. Wister and R. Caither. Printed by Hall and Sellers, 1779. The final Continental issue of January 14, 1779 incorporated watermarked paper and red security ink at the left border as well as a portion of the emblem on the front of the note. This was done to ostensibly reduce counterfeiting but by this point, the rampant inflation had reduced the value of the Continentals to nearly nothing. Higher denominations up to $80 were added to little avail. "DEPRESSA RESURGIT" in emblem at left meaning "Having been pressed down it rises up again." Four clear borders with three of uniform size; the left border being slightly smaller. Unimprovable paper quality and inking throughout, with sharp and clear signatures. Highly legible "UNITED STATES" watermark as well. Outstanding eye appeal. PMG Pop 2/3 Finer.
From the Mid-Continent Collection.

Estimate: $2000.00- $3000.00
