1844-D Liberty Head Half Eagle. Winter 11-G. AU-55+ (PCGS).
This gorgeous example exhibits vivid olive-orange color and nearly full mint frost. The strike is razor sharp to full throughout, impressively so for the issuing mint. Attractively original and appearing quite smooth in hand, even the most discerning Southern gold collectors will be impressed by this PQ example. Vying with the 1843-D and 1845-D as the most readily obtainable Dahlonega Mint half eagle from the 1840s, the 1844-D is still scarce in an absolute sense. When found with the superior surface preservation and eye appeal offered here, this issue is rare.
