1894 United States Assay Commission Medal. By Charles E. Barber and George T. Morgan. JK AC-38. Rarity-5. Silver. MS-62 (NGC).
33 mm. Warmly toned in a blend of olive-gray and golden-apricot, this satiny and boldly impressed example appears smooth enough to support a Choice Mint State grade. The 1894 Assay Commission medal features an attractive design, the reverse with seated Juno Moneta returning a weight to a cherub. We have offered only a few other silver strikings of this issue in recent years, underscoring the significance of this lot for specialists.
From our (Bowers and Merena's) sale of the Virgil Brand Collection, March 1990, lot 26; Presidential Coin & Antique Co.'s Auction Sixty, June 1996, lot 276; our sale of the Newmark Collection, May 2019 Baltimore Auction, lot 3082. Presidential lot tag included.
