Description

1883-CC Liberty Head Double Eagle. MS-62+ (PCGS). CAC.

Outstanding honey-apricot surfaces are fully lustrous with smartly impressed, sharply defined features. Frosty in texture and uncommonly smooth, even the most discerning gold enthusiasts will be impressed by this beautiful coin. Mint records indicate a production figure of 59,962 1883-CC double eagles, most of which entered the channels of commerce and circulated extensively. David W. Akers in his 1982 treatise on double eagles accounted for 39 auction appearances of Mint State double eagles in a survey of more than 400 major auction sales. This figure seems to dovetail nicely with Dave Bowers' estimate of 60 to 100 examples, which he presented in his 2004 Guide Book of Double Eagles published by Whitman, as well as Rusty Goe's modern (2020) estimate of 75 to 90 survivors at this level. The certification service statistics indicate a larger Uncirculated population, but this data is likely skewed by the fact that some specimens are cracked out of holders and resubmitted multiple times. On the other hand, we do believe that a few additional Uncirculated coins have entered the market in recent years through repatriations from foreign bank hoards. The offered example from the Fairmont Collection is a newcomer to the market. It is an important numismatic treasure, and a coin that will surely be eagerly pursued by advanced collectors of Carson City coinage and Liberty Head gold.
