1854 Braided Hair Cent. N-8. Rarity-1. MS-65 RD (PCGS).
This handsome Gem is ideally suited for inclusion in a high quality type set. It is aglow with vivid reddish-orange mint color, the surfaces with a few glints of pale steely tinting evident as the coin rotates under a light. Satiny in texture and predominantly smooth, a pair of carbon spots at the lower left reverse border are the only impediments to an even higher grade. Bob Grellman (2021) reports for the 1854 Newcomb-8 variety: "More than fifty seen in Mint State; ten of those show significant amount of mint red, many others have traces of mint red visible." The present example is one of the finer in the former category, a typical Die State b coin with a generally well executed strike. Very nice!
PCGS# 1906. NGC ID: 226L.
PCGS Population (all die marriages of the issue): 13; with a single MS-66 RD finer.
