Samuel Augustus Lawrence was born March 13, 1841, to John and Emily Gates Lawrence in Ashby, Massachusetts. As a 21 year-old carpenter, he enlisted on September 2, 1862, as a private and the following month, mustered into D Company of the Massachusetts 53rd Infantry as a sergeant. He was transferred to E Company of the Massachusetts 5th Infantry in July 1864, where he served until November 1864. During the War, in July 1864, he married Susan M. Proctor and shortly after the War had a son and two daughters, one of whom died in infancy. Samuel and his family lived their entire lives in Stow, where he passed away on September 5, 1900.
