Description

Union. Department of the Gulf. XIX Corps Badge. Silver. Extremely Fine.
40 mm x 37.5 mm, greatest dimensions. 5.14 grams. Two-part hanging badge, the lower part cross-shaped and inscribed 19 / CORPS within an ornate border. The pinback hanger is inscribed J.E. MULLEN. Lightly and originally toned on the front of both parts, the back is more extensively patinated. Well preserved apart from a minor bend to the pin. As cataloged by FJP Auctions in their March 2011 offering of this piece: "Captain John Mullen served in the 12th Connecticut Infantry, which was part of 2nd Division, 19th Corps. Nineteenth Army Corps was made up of Federal troops in the Department of the Gulf. In 1863, it was engaged in Louisiana and at Port Hudson. It had a role in the Red River Expedition where it fought at the Battles of Sabine Cross Roads and Pleasant Hill. In 1864, the 1st and 2nd Divisions transferred to Virginia and Maryland, and fought at Opequon, Fisher's Hill and Cedar Creek. The 12th Connecticut Infantry was mustered in 3 December 1861 and fought throughout the war, losing 273 men."
