Description

"1934" Henry Morgenthau, Jr., Secretary of the Treasury Medal. By John R. Sinnock and Adam Pietz. Failor-Hayden 214, var. Silver. Awarded to Paul A. Volcker, December 2016. Mint State.
76 mm. 251.97 grams. The reverse with the added inscription in the lower field PRESENTED TO / PAUL A. VOLCKER - DECEMBER 2016. With wisps of iridescent olive and reddish-apricot toning to otherwise light pewter-gray surfaces. A trivial edge nick at 3 o'clock on the reverse is noted. Housed in the original attractive, polished and glossy wooden presentation case with the seal of the United States Mint on the lid. Henry Morgenthau, Jr. (1891-1967) served as secretary of the Treasury during the administration of Franklin D. Roosevelt. His portrait on this medal was engraved in 1938 by John Sinnock, chief engraver of the U.S. Mint from 1925 to 1947, and also responsible for the Roosevelt dime, obverse of the Franklin half dollar, and several commemorative issues. This prestigious award was presented to Mr. Volcker on December 5, 2016 by U.S. Treasury Secretary Jack Lew in recognition of his extraordinary public service. The event was the conference on financial crises co-hosted by the Volcker Alliance and the Institute for New Economic Thinking in Washington, D.C. In presenting the award, Mr. Lew stated, "As I'm about to complete my own term, it's my honor to bestow this award to Paul Volcker, with my personal appreciation for his many contributions over a distinguished career."
