1862 Abraham Lincoln Indian Peace Medal. Copper, Bronzed. First Size. Julian IP-38, Prucha-51, Cunningham 22-020Bz, King-520. Second Reverse. MS-65 BN (NGC).
76 mm. A lovely medal and easily the nicest bronze impression we have handled in years. Rich mahogany surfaces are lightly mottled from what was probably an imperfection in the bronzing process that often results in such a patina. Still, the colors are very pleasing. Virtually mark free as one should expect for the grade, with just a few tiny dark flecks noted under magnification. The exceptional Larry Ness Collection of Peace Medals, one of the most complete ever formed, included an NGC-graded MS-62, which realized $2,160 in our March 2020 sale. This one is considerably nicer and more attractive in every respect and would be ideal for any collector of Peace medals, U.S. Mint medals or medallic portraits of Lincoln.
