1787 Fugio Cent. Pointed Rays. Newman 8-X, W-6750. Rarity-3. STATES UNITED, 4 Cinquefoils--Multiple Strikes--EF-40 (PCGS).
Another mind-boggling mint error example of Newman 8-X. This piece displays remnants of as many as four or five different strikes, with obverse detail seen offset at least three different ways relative to the primary, centered strike -- GIO of FUGIO above, sun rays to the right, and E of BUSINESS slightly offset to the lower left; this in addition to an off center brockage strike leaving an arc of impressed dentils at the center of the obverse. The reverse shows only subtle evidence of the multiple strikes with slight doubling seen near the rims and a faint arc from the rim of an off center strike. There is also a depression at the central reverse that is most likely an effect of the error strike. The coin itself is problem-free with glossy chocolate-brown surfaces. A captivating piece with a seemingly endless amount of intricacies to study.
