(Undated) Man with Beard, Hat and Collar. By George Washington "Bo" Hughes. Host Coin About Uncirculated.
This is an above average to superior carving on a Type II Buffalo nickel with considerable fine detail to the beard. The obverse is lightly toned in golden-gray, while the reverse displays a bit bolder patina with powder blue, pale gold, and faint rose overtones. It is a significant and highly desirable piece that is sure to appeal to advanced Hobo nickel enthusiasts. George Washington "Bo" Hughes was born around 1900 and was the son of a freed enslaved man. He became a prolific carver after learning the craft from his friend and mentor Bertram "Bert" Wiegand. Today, the hobo nickels from "Bo" and "Bert" remain some of the most collectible and in demand. Housed in a 2x2 with the signature of Bill Fivaz and the note of "ORIGINAL "BO" HOBO 5C" at top.
