SWEDEN. Gustaf I Silver Medal, ND (1745-60). PCGS SPECIMEN-67.
Hildebrand II, p. 558, 44. Regents of Sweden series. Diameter: 44mm. Obverse: Bareheaded, armored, and draped bust right, wearing ruffled collar; Reverse: Legend and date in 11 lines. Softly argent and darkly toned in spots, this alluring example enchants and delights. Swiss-born Johann Carl Hedlinger (1691-1771) was trained in Paris and later became the court medalist in Stockholm, where he produced numerous historical medals on commission. His portraits are often viewed as some of the most elegant and well-known, and he contributed greatly to his series of "Regentlängd," or "regent lengths,"--a series that provided portraits and brief biographies of the Swedish monarchs from Björn på Håga through Fredrik I.
