CC-101. Continental Currency. January 14, 1779. $70. PMG About Uncirculated 53.
No. 122457. Boldly signed by Gamble and Snowden. This is the second-highest denomination Continental note, only found in this eleventh, and final, Continental emission. The need arose for higher denominations due to rampant inflation at this time. The emblem shows a tree standing alone. The motto VIM PROCELLARUM QUADRENNIUM SUSTINUIT, which Newman translates "For four years it has withstood the force of storm." This is the lengthiest motto seen on Continental currency. Uncirculated examples are really scarce and even nice AU notes are not so easy to locate. The Newman note graded PCGS EF 45PPQ and escalated to a solid four-figure price. The last example we sold of this $70 denomination was in this same PMG About Unc 53 grade and it realized a healthy $900.
