"1737" (1860s) Higley Copper. Bolen Copy. Musante JAB-10, Kenney-4, W-14270. THE VALVE OF THREE PENCE / CONNECTICVT, 3 Hammers. Copper. MS-66 BN (NGC).
Exceptional for the type, this satiny, mostly golden-copper example displays blushes of iridescent pinkish-rose color around the peripheries. Struck slightly off center on both sides, the obverse is devoid of denticulation along the lower border, reverse also along the lower border. In general, however, the major design elements are sharply to fully defined. The dies for this type were cut by John Adams Bolen in 1864 and sold to Dr. F.S. Edwards of New York the following year. Edwards used them to produce an unknown number of restrikes in various metallic compositions. Bolen produced 40 copper impressions, presumably followed by additional pieces when the dies were in Edwards' hands.
