LESBOS. Mytilene. Fourree Hekte (2.11 gms), ca. 412-378 B.C., or somewhat thereafter. NGC F, Strike: 4/5 Surface: 2/5. Scratches.
cf. HGC-6, 1003 (for prototype); cf. Bodenstedt-77 (same). Obverse: Head of Io right, wearing tainia; Reverse: Wreathed head of Dionysos right in linear square within incuse square. The practice of passing counterfeits is not a new one, and this example of an ancient fourree proves that, with someone cleverly attempting to pass off this plated base metal example as a legitimate electrum type. The design, though slightly cruder than the original, matches quite faithfully the original types imitated, and the plating is still strong today without any core showing through.
