SPAIN. Great Britain - Spain. Philip II/Defeat of the Spanish Armada Cast Gilt Silver Medal, ND (ca. 1590). VERY FINE Details. Marks.
Possibly after J. da Trezzo. Diameter: 30mm; Weight: 16.01 gms. Obverse: Bareheaded and armored bust right in ruffled collar; Reverse: SIC ERAT IN FATIS ( thus it was in the hand of fate ), hands over orb untying a knot fastened to a yoke. Edge : Some marks as made, otherwise plain. A charming and engaging contemporary satirical issue, this medal alluded to the New and Old Worlds being connected by the Spanish Empire, and then seemingly undone by the English defeat of the Spanish Armada. Quite SCARCE and exceptionally interesting, though a few light marks are noted in front of the bust of the Spanish monarch.
