MEXICO. Charles III/Mexico City Bronze Proclamation Medal, 1760. Mexico City Mint. NGC AU-58.
Grove-K-1b. Med-85; Her-75; Betts-473. Diameter: 44.0 mm; Weight: 38.2 gms. By A. B. Madero. Obverse: Armored draped bust of Charles III right; Reverse: Arms of Mexico City in ornamented frame. Struck on a cast planchet, some elements of the crude manner in which it was produced remain, but the surfaces on the whole are exceptionally pleasing and showcase glossy rich brown coloration. VERY RARE as a type, only a few public appearances at auction are recorded, most recently where a copper and gilt-copper example brought 1,500 and 1,600 Euros hammer respectively in November 2020. Those pieces, both better struck, were both ungraded, yet had marks and tooling that would likely result in "details" grades if certified.
