ROMAN REPUBLIC. A. Plautius. AR Denarius, Rome Mint, 55 B.C. NGC Ch EF.
Cr-431/1; Syd-932. Obverse: Turreted head of Cybele right; Reverse: Bacchius Judaeus kneeling right, holding reins and offering olive branch; behind, camel standing right. A very attractive piece, the reverse may feature the Judaean high priest Aristobulus II who led an uprising against Rome in 57 B.C. This example has attractive cabinet tone and light evidence of handling, with some light roughness on the reverse.
