Description

MACEDON. Amphipolis. AR Drachm (3.57 gms), 369/8 B.C. NGC EF★, Strike: 4/5 Surface: 4/5.

HGC-3.1, 413; Lorber-56c (O4/R3; this coin) = Jameson-1943 = H. Weber-1967. Obverse: Laureate head of Apollo facing slightly right, with drapery around neck; Reverse: Ethnic on raised linear square enclosing race torch; all within shallow incuse square. A masterpiece of antiquity, this elegant facing head type presents charming artistry combined with a deep cabinet tone and a wholesome overall look. For the advanced collector of miniature works of art, it would be hard to do finer. Compare to a die match (Lorber-56d), though with a somewhat less lengthy pedigree, that realized a total of $13,200 in January 2021.

From the Mark and Lottie Salton Collection. Ex: J. Hirsch. Ex: Robert Jameson Collection, Lot # 1943. Ex: Sir Hermann Weber Collection, Lot # 1967. Ex: Babington Collection (Sotheby, Wilkinson & Hodge - 2/1891) Lot # 96.
