1868 Pattern Five Cents. Judd-633, Pollock-705. Rarity-4. Nickel. Plain Edge. Proof-65 Ultra Cameo (NGC).
Obv: Similar to the adopted design for the contemporary three-cent nickel, with slight differences. The digit 1 in the date is centered between the border and the base of Liberty's portrait. Rev: A Roman numeral V in the center, with a wreath encircling, a scroll inscribed wit the motto IN GOD WE TRUST and a Maltese cross are above. An exceptional example of this scarce issue, and one of just six to earn the Ultra Cameo moniker from NGC, with bold visual contrast between the frosted devices and mirrored fields. Although available without this degree of contrast, the unearthly beauty of these pieces with the Ultra Cameo contrast commands attention from any who gaze at the surfaces.
PCGS# 960851. NGC ID: 29NN.
NGC Census: 4; 2 finer (PR-66 Ultra Cameo finest) within designation.
