Obv: The design features a right facing bust of Liberty with the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the border and the date 1859 below. Liberty is wearing a wreath of oak and vine leaves on her head, and a scroll inscribed LIBERTY crosses her shoulder. Rev: A wreath of cotton, tobacco, sugar cane, corn, wheat and oak leaves encircles the denomination 1/2 DOLLAR. Warmly toned steel-gray surfaces are sharply struck overall with a pleasingly smooth appearance in hand. The reverse design of this popular pattern half dollar type is attributed to Assistant Engraver Anthony C. Paquet.
