1874-S Trade Dollar. MS-64+ (PCGS). CAC.
Dusted with iridescent golden-apricot toning, this is an exceptionally well preserved and attractive coin from the early trade dollar series. Billowy mint luster flows over surfaces that are just a few stray marks away from full Gem quality. The San Francisco Mint struck 2,549,000 trade dollars in 1874, most of which were used in the China trade. Even so, this issue numbers among the more available in Mint State for its type, although the 1874-S is scarcer in an absolute sense than the 1875-S, 1876-S, 1877-S and 1878-S. Above the basal MS-64 level, the 1874-S is a formidable condition rarity and, indeed, this is the highest graded example that we can ever recall offering. Sure to spirited bidding among astute collectors.
