1913-S Buffalo Nickel. Type II. MS-66 (PCGS).
A beautifully toned Gem Type II San Francisco Mint Buffalo nickel from the inaugural issue of the series. The surfaces are painted in a blend of ice-blue and lime-old iridescence, complemented by significant underlying luster. Nicely struck with complete shoulder and head details on the reverse, which are often far weaker than seen on this ultra-Gem specimen. Minor weakness is reported on LIBERTY on the obverse. Its mintage of just over 1.2 million pieces is the third lowest in the design type, 1913-1938. As noted in the Lange reference on the series (2nd Edition, 2000): "In all grades this date is scarcer than its D-Mint counterpart, particularly with a full date and LIBERTY. Choice pieces are scarce, Gems truly rare."
