Description

Colombia. Barranquilla. Undated (1839-1840) Manuel Angulo. Rulau Atc-3A. Copper. Plain Edge--Overstruck on an 1837 Henry Anderson Hard Times token, HT-219, Low-107, W-NY-180-10a--AU-55 BN (NGC).

28.5 mm. Obv: Inscription EQUINA DEL VERDE with cannon at the center. Rev: Inscription VALE MITAD MANUEL ANGULO with a script MA in oval below. The undertype is clear and completely visible on both sides. A similar overstrike is known of a Mitad overstruck on a Low-103 of R & W Robinson, and that example is listed in the Sweeny reference. The color is typical medium brown with a few old scratches visible on the host, and minor surface porosity on the reverse. A desirable and rare item for the specialist.

From our (Stack's) Philadelphia Americana Sale of September 2009, lot 7111.
