"1677" (1880-1898) Dutch Fleet Burned and French Colony at Tobago Preserved Medal. Paris Mint Restrike. Betts-52. Silver. MS-62 (NGC).
41 mm. Edge marked (cornucopia). This handsome piece sports a fine-grain sandblast finish to predominantly antique silver surfaces. A tinge of pale olive is also evident on both sides, the obverse further enhanced by outlines of steely-gray to the design elements. Sharply struck and Choice apart from a couple of minor edge nicks at the upper obverse. While our (Stack's) January 2006 Ford XIII sale offered 10 bronze examples of this Betts number, as well as a uniface reverse striking in lead, no silver specimens were included. Several different obverse dies were represented among the former; on the present silver impression, the lowest hair curl at right touches the inner rim line, which is broken at that location. Rare, and sure to see spirited bidding among specialists.
