An impressive, large medal with a bold portrait in a plain field, styled after that by Charles Cushing Wright found on the 1848 Congressional Medal awarded him for his victories at Vera Cruz, Cerro Gordo, Contreras, San Antonio, Churubusco, Molino Del Rey and Chapultepec. Here paired with a patriotic reverse die celebrating the foundation of the Union and the battle for its preservation that commenced in 1861. The obverse toned a mottled steel grey and charcoal with some slight bubbling of the surface, the reverse in brighter reflective tones of pearl grey, orange and blue.
