1788 New Jersey Copper. Maris 65-u, W-5495. Rarity-4. Horse's Head Right. EF-40 (PCGS).
Impressive quality for this conditionally challenging New Jersey variety. Examples of Maris 65-u are very often plagued by serious planchet flaws, environmental damage, or a combination thereof. This sharp piece has glossy dark brown surfaces with no corrosion and only a minimal amount of natural planchet roughness and light striations. Double struck with about a 10% offset between strikes, resulting in a double row of dentils on the obverse, an odd-looking placement of NOVA relative to CAESAREA, and a charmingly misshapen shield on the reverse. An interesting specimen at a desirable grade level.
