1787 New Jersey Copper. Maris 56-n, W-5310. Rarity-1. Camel Head--Overstruck on a Double Struck 1787 Miller 31.1-gg.1 Connecticut Copper--Extremely Fine, Bent.
120.99 grains. A fascinating piece, not only are remnants of the undertype bold in the center of the reverse and at the upper right obverse, but in the latter area two sets of letters from the word AUCTORI are present to confirm the double strike for the Connecticut copper. Straight, shallow planchet clip at 9 o'clock relative to the obverse, both sides exhibit more or less bold detail for the New Jersey type from a well centered and nicely executed strike. A small indentation within the bottom of the shield is noted - the likely culprit for the bend - but otherwise the medium brown surfaces are pleasingly smooth in hand.
