Description

Demetrius III Eucaerus, 96-87 B.C

SYRIA. Seleukid Kingdom. Philip I Philadelphos, 94-83/75 B.C. AR Tetradrachm, Antioch on the Orontes Mint, Posthumous issue, dated year 21 of the Caesarean Era (29/8 B.C.). NGC Genuine.

Prieur-15; McAlee-14; RPC-1, 4138; HGC-9, 1360k. Obverse: Diademed head right; Reverse: Zeus seated left on throne, holding crowning Nike and scepter; thunderbolt above, monogram to inner left, monogram below throne; AK (date) in exergue; all within wreath. Designated as a "money of the Bible" issue, this silver piece emanates from Roman Syria where the coinage of Philip Philadelphos was continued, but with a dating system that correlated to Octavian, who would shortly thereafter take the name of Augustus.

Estimate: $50.00 - $100.00
