Description

Walking Liberty Half Dollar

Stunning Gem Uncirculated 1917-S Half Dollar

Obverse Mintmark

1917-S Walking Liberty Half Dollar. Obverse Mintmark. MS-66 (PCGS).

Wisps of iridescent reddish-apricot peripheral toning are a bit bolder on the obverse of this gorgeous upper end Gem. The balance of the surfaces are brilliant, and both sides are highly lustrous with a smooth, softly frosted finish. Fully struck, expertly preserved and a delight to behold, this impressive condition rarity would serve as a highlight in the finest Walking Liberty half dollar set. The 1917-S keeps company with eight others in the Walking Liberty series that had mintages of fewer than one million pieces. Only 952,000 half dollars were struck in 1917 with the mintmark on the obverse, in fact, and for many years this was considered one of the key dates to the series. Today, however, the 1917-S Obverse Mintmark is known to be fairly available in grades from About Uncirculated to MS-63. In MS-64 and MS-65 it remains rare while the MS-66 offered here is exceedingly so and worthy of the strongest bids.

PCGS# 6572. NGC ID: 24PT.

PCGS Population: 4; with a single MS-67 finer.

From the Collection of Silas Stanley Roberts, 1888-1966.

Estimate: 40000
