Massachusetts Cent
1788 Massachusetts Cent. Ryder 9-M, W-6270. Rarity-5+. Period After MASSACHUSETTS. VF-20 (PCGS).
150.8 grains. Glints of golden-brown enhance otherwise light copper surfaces on both sides of this satiny and predominantly smooth example. There are no marks of consequence, a few well scattered planchet pits generally out of the way and in any case easily forgiven. Boldly defined for the grade with a pleasing appearance for a Massachusetts copper that saw this extensive circulation. The last mid grade 1788 Ryder 9-M to trade in one of our auctions was the PCGS VF-25 in our November 2020 sale of the Michael Demling Collection that sold for $1,200. This piece has better color and is less flawed, and should fetch a stronger price despite the slightly lower certified grade.
