Counterstamps
California--Sacramento. J.L. POLHEMUS / (mortar and pestle) / DRUGGIST / 190 J. ST. COR. 7TH / SACRAMENTO CAL. on the obverse of Bolivia Republic 1830-JL 4 sueldos (or soles) from the Potosi Mint. Brunk P-563, Miller-Calif 2E. Host coin Very Good.
Deep silver-olive with deepening highlights in the protected areas. The famous Polhemus counterstamp with tiny mortar and pestle and address information in Sacramento, California is vertically impressed across Bolivar's portrait, although unevenly so with the design elements quite faint at the right. Rulau (2004) reports only two examples of this counterstamp on this particular host coin.
From the Q. David Bowers Collection. Earlier ex our (Stack's) sale of the Anthony Terranova Collection, September-October 2010 Philadelphia Americana Sale, lot 5224. Lot tag and collector envelope included. The plate coin for this attribution number in the 2004 edition of the Rulau reference on U.S. tokens.
