1919 Carnegie Hero Fund Medal. Bronze. Mint State.

76.2 mm. Obv: Frock-coated Andrew Carnegie bust to the right, inscriptions CARNEGIE HERO FUND above and ESTABLISHED APRIL 15TH 1904 below. Rev: Outline map of North America, arms of old Canada (four provinces), Newfoundland (then a separate Crown Colony) and the U.S. around a cartouche inscribed to the recipient ROBERT W. JACQUES / WHO SAVED / HAROLD R. EDER / FROM DROWNING / LAKETON, PA. / JULY 27, 1919. The Carnegie Hero Fund website, carnegiehero.org, includes the following information about the recipient of this medal: "Robert W. Jacques saved Harold R. Eder from drowning, Laketon, Pennsylvania, July 27, 1919. Harold, 16, machinist's helper, fell from a raft in Harvey Lake 175 feet from the bank, where the water was 12 feet deep. The raft drifted away from him, and Harold swam a short distance toward a boat, but he was tired from swimming and lost control of himself. Robert, 14, mechanic's helper, who was dressed, dived from the boat and swam 50 feet to Harold, who was threshing wildly. As Robert reached Harold, he put his hand under Harold's arm to support him, but Harold grasped his shoulders and climbed upon him. Both sank, and Robert squirmed and pushed Harold from him under water and swam to the surface. When Harold rose, Robert again supported him, and he and another youth who reached them then swam about 10 feet with Harold to the boat, which had been rowed toward them by a man after having been taken near the shore by two girls. 20018-1734"
