Award Medals
1963 Department of the Interior Distinguished Service Medal. By Gilroy Roberts. Gold. Mint State.
40 mm. 793.5 grains, .585 fineness (presumably), 463.2 grains AGW (presumably). Obv: Department of the Interior Seal with a bison as the prominent central motif. Rev: Department of the Interior building with inscriptions AWARDED / FOR above and DISTINGUISHED / SERVICE / To below, inscribed to the recipient CLARENCE J. WILHELM / JULY 23, 1963. A light colored gold alloy and not marked as to fineness, but these have been catalogued as 14K in the past by Joe Levine in his Presidential Coin and Antique sales so presumably others have been tested as such or literature exists pinpointing to this as the believed composition. The last one of these we sold (2016), however, tested as 16.4K. Housed in its original fitted blue presentation case. The recipient, Clarence L. Wilhelm, was affiliated with the Bureau of Mines.
