British Indian Peace Medals
Sharp Undated George III Peace Medal
With Original Hanger
Undated (ca. 1776-1814) George III Indian Peace Medal. Large Size. Adams 7.3 (Obverse 3, Reverse B). Struck Solid Silver. Extremely Fine.
77.2 mm. 1823.6 grains. Bright silver surfaces from an apparently not too distant polishing, though deeper silver outlines remain in some of the recesses, particularly within the rims. The original ornate suspension hanger is intact, if a bit flattened, and shows little wear. The surfaces of the medal bear numerous small nicks and scratches, illustrating that this piece probably saw some hard use by its original recipient, but for a short period of time. Perhaps this was a matter of a change of allegiance from the British to the Americans, and this medal was traded in for a replacement bearing an American president. We will never know if such a precise history can be applied to this medal, but it was a desired outcome for the American side during this critical historical period. Despite the unusually bright surfaces, this piece retains exceptional sharpness and rather nice aesthetic appeal considering the lack of serious marks or damage that is frequently encountered on such medals.
