Description

Louisiana

Louisiana, New Orleans. J.A. Benjamin. January 20, 1862 $1. PCGS Banknote Very Good 10 Details. Damaged, Repaired.

A rare New Orleans scrip note and the first we have sold. Printed on brown paper. No imprint. Written plate letter B. This is the later variety which mentions that he had a "Dry Goods Store." Central vignette of an ocean bound paddle wheeler. Standing Liberty with cap on pole at left. ONE DOLLAR in cartouche at right. PCGS Banknote cites Damaged; Repaired as the reasons for the details designation. The only other two we have encountered were a pair of 50 Cent notes that hailed from the Eric P. Newman collection. Those two notes were only a little better in quality than this one but both sold for thousand dollar prices.

Estimate: $ 400 - 600
