Counterstamps

C.T. PLACE in a serrated box punch on the obverse and C.T.P. (4) on an 1832 Matron Head large cent. Brunk P-530, Rulau-Unlisted. Host coin About Good.

Caleb T. Place (1809-1889) was a blacksmith working in Scituate, RI from at least the 1840s to the 1870s. Brunk gives no information on this issuer, but does list this exact piece as the only one reported.
