STONE & BALL on an 1830 Capped Bust dime JR-3. Brunk S-1021, Rulau-NY-1027L var. Host coin Very Good.

he firm of Stone & Ball of Syracuse, New York, was composed of S. Seymour, H. Stone, and Calvin S. Ball, who sold silverware and jewelry, and repaired clocks and watches. The firm held a contract with the Syracuse School Board to keep its clocks in working order. Their partnership extended from 1853 through 1869. After the partnership dissolved, Ball was the sole principal of the firm until 1903; he issued counterstamps in just his name. Due to the size of the host coin, the location part of their stamp is not seen on this example. This is the only bust dime known with this stamp and is unlisted in Brunk or Rulau.

From the Steve M. Tompkins Collection.

Estimate: $ 175
