Description

August Bechtler $1

Undated (1842-1852) August Bechtler $1. K-24. Rarity-3. 27. G., 21. C. Plain Edge. AU Details--Damaged (NGC).

A very attractive piece with warm honey-gold iridescence and otherwise pale yellow patina. The definition is uniform across both side and there are no significant distractions to note. A few minor creases in the planchet are visible upon inspection, but the overall quality remain superb. Struck from locally mined gold by August Bechtler at Rutherfordton, North Carolina. We estimate a surviving population of between 1,000 and 2,000 specimens, making K-24 one of the more available varieties of privately issued coins from the Appalachian Gold Rush. However, this small supply falls dramatically short of collector demand.

PCGS# 10040.

Estimate: $ 1500
