Liberty Head Eagle
1847 Liberty Head Eagle. MS-62 (PCGS).
A truly exceptional example from the early No Motto Liberty Head eagle series, this attractive coin displays vivid golden-orange patina. The finish is bright and satiny and the fields are semi-reflective. Near-fully struck with a remarkably smooth appearance for the assigned grade, this premium quality coin would make an outstanding addition to an advanced gold type or date set. With the highest mintage of its type (862,258 circulation strikes), the 1847 is easily the most common No Motto Liberty Head eagle in terms of total number of coins extant. A quick study of the PCGS Population Report shows a great concentration of coins in the EF-40 to AU-50 range, however, and in Mint State it is a formidable condition rarity. One of the finest, most attractive examples that we have ever handled, and we recommend the strongest bids for this beautiful and conditionally rare coin.
PCGS# 8597. NGC ID: 262Z.
PCGS Population: 24; 5 finer (MS-64 finest). The unusual concentration of grading events in MS-62 for this issue suggests multiple resubmissions of one or more coins in the hopes of securing a higher grade.
