Classic Head Half Eagle
1838-C Classic Head Half Eagle. HM-1, Winter-1. Rarity-4+. VF Details--Harshly Cleaned (PCGS).
Plenty of sharp striking detail remains to the focal features to tempt the budget minded Southern gold enthusiast. A glossy texture and light hairlining explain the PCGS qualifier, although the surfaces have retoned quite nicely in bold olive-orange. The popular 1838-C is the first Charlotte Mint half eagle and the only one of the Classic Head design type. The mintage is a scant 17,179 pieces, and most have long since been lost to commercial use. Scarce to rare in all grades, the 1838-C has an extant population of fewer than 300 coins, perhaps fewer than 200. This more affordable VF is sure to see spirited bidding from both Southern gold specialists and collectors who focus on the Classic Head half eagle series of 1834 to 1838.
