Lafayette Silver Dollar
1900 Lafayette Silver Dollar. MS-65+ (PCGS). CAC.
Exceptional premium Gem Mint State quality for this conditionally challenging classic commemorative issue. Generally brilliant, both sides exhibit delicate pinkish-gold highlights that are largely confined to the peripheries. Sharply struck and intensely lustrous, overall smooth-looking surfaces set this coin apart from the majority of Mint State Lafayette dollars extant. This type commemorates constriction of a monument to General Lafayette erected at the 1900 Paris Expedition. Although the Philadelphia Mint struck 50,000 pieces for distribution, the maximum allowed by Congress, only 36,000 coins were sold and the remaining 14,000 examples were melted. Many of the Lafayette dollars sold were either cleaned, circulated, or preserved in lower end Mint State grades with handling and heavy contact marks, making Gem examples extremely sought after by the uncompromising collector. This piece stands out for its beauty and is sure to end up in a high quality set.
