1848 Lewis Cass Shell Medalet. DeWitt-LC 1848-7, var. Gilt Brass Shells. Choice Mint State.

23.9 mm. A superb piece, one of two that we handled as part of the John J. Ford, Jr. Collection in 2013 (lot 10613). This is an unlisted variant of 1848-7, with an ornate floral frame rather than the plain one illustrated in Sullivan. Made with an integral loop that must have been poorly affixed inside since it is lost on this piece, which shows evidence of having been worn. Beautiful surfaces with no loss of gilding and bright gold color. A very rare piece for the Cass campaign and among the highlights of the political offerings in this sale.
