Description

Washingtoniana

1889 Inaugural Centennial Medal. By Augustus Saint-Gaudens and Philip Martiny. Musante GW-1135, Baker-671, Douglas-53. Cast Bronze. Mint State.

115.2 mm. We are pleased to be offering multiple examples of this impressive and eagerly sought Washington type in this sale. The medal in this lot is lighter than typically seen for the type with a pleasing medium golden-brown finish. Slight marbling of olive-brown is so faint it is easily overlooked at most viewing angles. Boldly defined and otherwise blemish free, a tiny, ancient verdigris spot within the feathers at the base of the eagle's left wing is mentioned solely for accuracy. A handsome piece worthy of the strongest bids.

Estimate: $ 500
