Description

Indian Peace Medals

Lot of (2) (ca. 1890) George Washington Private Indian Peace Medals. No Periods Reverse. Copper. Plain Edge. Fine, or so.

Included are: 62.7 mm, pierced; and 62.0 mm, unpierced. These pieces appear to be cast forgeries based on the general weakness of detail and porous surfaces. The unpierced one seems roughly handled, with numerous rim bumps and other irregularities, though without a piercing, it could not have been worn, the usual ways these medals get banged up. The other is a bit smoother, but still with oddly weak detail. These are sold as study pieces only. Though they are old, we do not believe them to be contemporary struck pieces.

From the Larry Ness Collection.

Estimate: $ 200
