Military Medals
"1863" (ca. 1865) Major General Ulysses. S. Grant Medal. By Anthony C. Paquet. Julian MI-29. Bronze. MS-62 BN (NGC).
102 mm. A sharply defined and handsome piece to represent this impressive type. Blended olive and autumn-brown patina to both sides, the surfaces revealing more vivid faded rose color in a few isolated areas. Light carbon on the obverse and a few tiny marks in the expansive reverse field are noted, commensurate with the assigned grade. Awarded by Resolution of Congress, December 17, 1863, for the capture of Vicksburg. This is one of the largest medals struck by the Philadelphia Mint. Today the site of the battle is a vast national park with motor tours and a park headquarters with exhibits -- well worth visiting.
