Hadrian Cancels Public Tax Debts
HADRIAN, A.D. 117-138. AE Sestertius (24.08 gms), Rome Mint, ca. A.D. 120-122. NGC EF, Strike: 4/5 Surface: 3/5. Fine Style.
RIC-592. Obverse: Laureate bust right, with slight drapery; Reverse: RELIQVA VETERA HS NOVIES MILL ABOLITA, lictor standing right, holding fasces over shoulder and lighting pile of records on fire with torch; to left, three citizens standing right, raising right hands in approbation. Given the monumental significance of Hadrian's gracious act, this type has always been a popular collecting pursuit, and one which is not encountered too frequently. Indeed, when they are, examples tend not to feature as pleasing and alluring apple green surfaces as the present specimen. Though some of the reverse legend is no longer visible, the important iconography depicted there is still fully discernable.
